The book “Cardiac Biomarkers: Expert Advice for Clinicians” discusses about the cardiac biomarkers that have permeated hospitals and research laboratories in no time in the recent history. Therefore, it is vital for healthcare practitioners to have a clear understanding of this rapidly evolving field so that it can be used to better arm ourselves in the care of the patient. The book entitled is divided into five sections. First section deals with the cardiac risk markers. This section gives an overview of the importance of cardiac biomarkers along with the new exciting biomarkers. In the section “Markers of cardiac ischemia,” acute coronary syndrome, which is one of the most important and rapidly growing areas in medicine today, was discussed by understanding how the new “high-sensitive” troponins work is crucial to patient care, both for rapid diagnosis and effective triage. In the third section, natriuretic peptides for heart failure were elucidated. Natriuretic peptides (NPs) are firmly established as biomarkers for making the diagnosis of heart failure as well as ruling out heart failure in the patient presenting with shortness of breath. One of the most novel and relevant areas of biomarker translational work is in the setting of cardiorenal disease. The new definition of cardiorenal syndromes as well as the implications of these syndromes on medical management is discussed in the fourth section. The final section outlines about the future of biomarkers with specific emphasis on a number of the most promising markers.
